Meet John Shewchuk, The Guy In Charge of Microsoft’s Developer Outreach Team

Microsoft had a big problem - software developers show little interest in talking to society, and even less to work with. Because Microsoft is based on these people to build Windows applications and buy Microsoft technology was a very bad sign.

So while CEO Steve Ballmer a Satya Nadella continues to climb, and lots of other senior officers of the company turned to Microsoft Technical fellow John Shewchuk - chosen for this distinction by Bill Gates himself - support that ..

The team of developer experience aims to be the public face of the company all techie, parachuting to help customers and partners with what they have problems - even if it is a problem that do not refer to any technology Microsoft . It's like Apple Genius Bar for real geniuses. "We do this absolutely free, which is a little weird," says Shewchuk. So far, the team Shewchuk developer experience helped and collaborated with problems in places like Y Combinator startup accelerator, G ..

The aim is to highlight how plugged in society is in trends, processes and concerns of modern engine tion, even if it comes at the expense of directly promote Microsoft technologies. Instead, goodwill ambassadors are simply further the mission of Microsoft.

"It's something that feels like we're in this great mission and help us out," Shewchuk said. But when Shewchuk come together, this is not where he was team developer experience. Absolutely. "When I came here, it was just ..

Microsoft Cuts Azure Cloud Pricing

To compete with AWS.

Customers of the cloud platform of Microsoft Azure will be substantial price cuts from next month, in a film directed directly to Microsoft rivals Amazon Web Services.

Although Microsoft has not released the full list of price cuts, director Nicole Herskowitz Azure product marking for the company said that the cost of Linux instances will be reduced from 14 to 17 percent.
Windows virtual machines, including the operating system license, also be reduced by 10-13 percent. Herskowitz said Microsoft was lower prices to stay competitive with Amazon Web Services.
AWS has also refined its pricing model this month, adding another type of reserved instance.

Called scheduled instance, the new type of virtual machine allows users to book Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) or capacity over a period of three years and use it at any time.

The use of these limited to pre-defined blocks of recurring time for a period of one year cases would see prices fall by five to ten percent below the equivalent rates EC2 On-Demand, Amazon said.

Microsoft Is Getting Users Excited About Windows Again -- Just Not on Phones Yet

Windows 10 is already running on 200 million devices, but Microsoft still has a long way to go before we see significant growth in Windows Phone.

He has been a long time coming, but (NASDAQ: MSFT) Microsoft Windows platform seems to win back the favor of consumers and the business market. In a recent blog, Microsoft said that Windows 10 adoption rates ahead of Windows 7 and Windows 8140% to almost 400%. In total, the company said in Windows 10 now runs on 200 million devices.

That is good news for the company given that the latest iteration of Windows were spectacular. There is a caveat to all windows growth: Windows 10 is available free upgrade to Windows 7 and Windows 8 users - something earlier versions of Windows do not offer - which is probably part of the success of current software.

But there is another good news for Microsoft, which coincides with the additional use of Windows 10, and that is the fact that more and more users enter the Windows Store.

The company noted that in December, 60% of paying customers were new to the App Store, and that in the same month of Windows 10 machines spent 4.5 times more on the Windows Store in Windows 8 devices. Increased use store the application and income is what is truly remarkable in the blog notes that Microsoft because ultimately, Microsoft can start building some momentum for their phones Windows 10.

Problem is no secret moving window

There is nothing surprising about the problems Microsoft phone. The company has so far back (NASDAQ: AAPL) Android and Apple iOS that barely registers in the instrument market share (Index: Windows is one of the very lower lines)

All Windows phones have made little progress in recent years have recently lost (which led me to name the worst features of Microsoft products in 2015), mainly due to the shameful lack of applications available for the platform platform. But Microsoft is, if only slightly, demonstrating that Windows phones can have a future with its latest store usage statistics Windows.

The company said it has universal applications such as Twitter, Pandora, Netflix available on computers, tablets and phones. And the idea of universal Windows 10 applications is that Microsoft is betting the future of its smartphones. If developers make applications for the platform increasingly Windows 10, and then these applications will also be available on Windows phones, which are expected to boost Windows 10 mobile adoption rates. As Microsoft has said in his blog, "These developers see the hundreds of millions of customers have the opportunity -. And there are only beginning"

In fact, Microsoft has only just begun. I think that Windows 10 has the ability to alleviate the problems of your Microsoft and possibly allow it to compete with Android and iOS. Once Windows 10 becomes more pervasive and integrated developers see their applications for PCs and tablets work well on Windows phones so he could help stimulate the creation of a universal application, which in turn could stimulate interest in the Windows phones.

But Microsoft is still far from that point. The company has a market share of less than 3% in the smartphone space, and Windows 10 will not change things quickly. Users have all but pledged allegiance to either Android or iOS, and still take more than a little success for Windows 10 to pull the phone division of society from the mire. For investors of Microsoft, it is expected to last from Windows 10 adoption rates and use of the store application to be a promising show, but the path to growth of Windows Phone will be a long journey, and its success is still far from certain.

The fall of Microsoft, in one chart

It's been a rough decade or more by Microsoft. He lost his position as the most valuable technology company in the world to his old rival of Apple, and even if Windows maintains a very important market share in the PC market is collapsing, and Microsoft is struggling to keep Apple and Google when it comes to tablets, phones and watches.

In the process, he lost a lot of ground among developers, as this painting of Joshua Kunst (through Ed Tufte) illustrates:

The table shows the most popular tags stack overflow, a forum widely used programming where users can ask and answer questions on topics coding. When the site was launched in 2008, the top five was dominated by issues related to Microsoft: the programming language C #, which Microsoft created; .NET Framework software to write applications for Microsoft Windows; and ASP.NET, .NET subset used to write web applications.

To some extent this was a result of the aid that stack overflow was in the beginning. It was started by two developers of Windows, veteran Joel Spolsky and Jeff Atwood, and the site itself was written in C # and ASP.NET, so its first users were interested in disproportionately on these issues and subjects were bound to lose in the site gained popularity users outside the C # NET / community ..

However, the table also says something about the declining importance of the tools of Microsoft. C # was still in first place in 2011, when the site was already popular enough to be more than one million unique visitors per day, but then fell. ASP.NET and .NET have declined even more dramatically, so much so that not even the best 30 labels in 2015. In contrast, Java - long a major competitor to C # - remained at large summit partly because Google has chosen as the primary language for writing Android applications. Windows Mobile, where C # is usable, never took off, and now Android is by far the most popular mobile platform.

But the decline of Microsoft is not just about smartphones. Side web programming languages that compete with C # and ASP.NET server - like PHP and Python - acquired in ASP.NET weakened.

SQL Server, the database Microsoft's flagship, has lost ground to the MySQL open source. And as more and more energy on Web development headers for the client side - where you basically have to use HTML and JavaScript - Developing server side through frameworks such as ASP.NET lost some relevance. Now, a growing number of sites are choosing to use JavaScript to the server as well. Microsoft has made some progress in this area with its machine language (a version of JavaScript with some additional features), but in general, if you are a developer, where to find Microsoft technologies is much lower in 2015 than it was in 2008.

There are some interesting trends are not from Microsoft on the table too. The statistical language R gained popularity as data analysis has become an important center for high-tech companies. XML, a markup language for recording data is very similar to HTML, it became less popular, while JSON, an alternative to the basic JavaScript, gained ground. And several JavaScript frameworks like jQuery and angularjs has seen increased interest.
