Microsoft Chairman Thompson on Racism and “Assimilating” to Succeed in Silicon Valley
"We do not care about people of color in our store, but do not want in our office ..." was part of the examination of a racist incident that President John W. Thompson Microsoft has experienced during his early days as IBM vendor.
In a fascinating informal discussion, Thompson spoke of cases of racism hard he suffered during his years at IBM and also spoke of the need for blacks to "assimilate" the corporate culture.
The talk took place during a gala evening at the economic summit week on Wall Street Project in New York. The discussion also included the Rev. Jesse Jackson and was moderated by NavArrow Wright, president, Solutions maximum leverage.
How racist incident was beneficial
"The first time that the question of my ethnicity wine, which had been at IBM for six months and I was riding with the sales rep who was a year and a half or two before me," Thompson said in response to being asked first time in his black being intercepted his rise in the technology industry.
Thompson remembered the day he and the chief representative of IBM sales resulted in Dade City, Florida, to complete a sales order to a parts dealer Napa.
"Tom [IBM sales representative] gets the type of signing the order and he punishes three cigars And the guy looks at me and says."? So what to do "and I said, 'Well, I'm an intern and sales in 12 months or more, when I return to my training program I'm going to be a sales representative as Tom" Thompson said public.
"And he said," Really? "I went, 'Yeah, really." So Tom looks, looks at me and says: "Do not get back." The NAPA Parts then dealer explained that blacks are not received in the same office if they are allowed in your shop.
Thompson explained that the unpleasant incident actually helped accelerate his career at IBM. It is feared that as a seller would have to try to sell computers to "morons like" to support his family. IBM, a company with a track record of supporting diversity within its walls, acknowledged the difficulty of being black posed for Thompson as a seller and the sale of the main accounts of the company accelerated.
"I immediately started selling to large accounts and cut literally five years of my career in the early days. And I have a lot of support teams in the industry," recalls Thompson.

Microsoft Azure IoT Hub Reaches General Availability
Microsoft has recently announced its offer Azure Iot Axis reached general availability (GA). This is a statement tracking public preview from Microsoft in October last year. InfoQ previously covered the public announcement preview under the cover of Azure event.
Azure IO Hub is one of the basic services that make the IO Suite Azure. IO Hub Azure service provides two-way communication between devices and the cloud.
The devices are connected via a gateway local field when Internet connectivity is not available on the device or when a device communicates only unsupported such as ZigBee or Modbus protocols. The gateway on the ground, in turn, will contact the IO Hub Cloud Gateway.
On the other hand, if a device supports HTTP (S) 1.1, 3.1.1 or 1.0 MQTT AMQP can communicate natively with the IO Hub Cloud Gateway. SDK for the device are available for C / C #, Java and JavaScript / Node.js
As part of the General Assembly of the service, Microsoft increased the number of areas where the service is available by adding Southeast Asia, Western Europe and the western United States. Previously, preview, only East Asia, the eastern United States and northern Europe were available.
From the point of view of safety, Azure Hub supports IO device identity and can support customer scenarios involving millions of devices. Since the device is compatible with the identity, administrators can list blacklists and white devices.
Since communication is bidirectional between the device and the cloud, command and control messages can be sent from the cloud that allows operators to change the status of a remote device.
Once a device is connected to the IO Hub Azure messaging and other services that are part of the IO Suite Azure can be used in the treatment of these events.
This enables organizations to perform complex event processing and provide a predictive analysis. The other services that make up the suite of backend Azure IO include: 1 event Azure concentrators (upscale, publish-subscribe engine ingestion) 2 Azure Analytics (analysis and real-time engine flows of complex event processing) 3 Machine Learning Azure (predictive analysis) 4 Azure storage (cloud storage)

Microsoft, GoPro Strike Licensing Deal
Microsoft said Friday it has signed a patent license agreement with GoPro covering technology file storage.
GoPro shares, which have been hit this week and in recent months, added 6.2 percent in after-hours trading to $ US10.58 per share. Microsoft shares ticked up 0.2 percent.
The patent licensing agreement comes just days after GoPro announced a lower profit in the fourth quarter, fueling concerns about the health of your business selling portable cameras heart.
The agreement with Microsoft will cover some of the technologies and storage of files.
Nick Psyhogeos, president of the patent business of Microsoft, said the company is experiencing strong demand for mobile technologies, which already has a license. Microsoft did not elaborate on the deal.
A GoPro representative did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
GoPro shares ended the week up to 13 percent after saying sales would decline this year and announced the departure of a senior executive. The stock fell 46 percent last month and 82 percent in the past year.
GoPro has been affected by fears that the market for portable cameras are dry, while also facing competition from overseas manufacturers and smartphone technology. The company is studying a number of new revenue streams, including unmanned aircraft that will be published later this year and shooting license content on their devices for media companies.
